Guests are given a chance to interact with and learn more about the customs and culture of local Dete residents through three different non-intrusive but enlightening experiences and projects.
Dingani Primary is the local primary school close to our lodge and as a rural African school, it might be quite different to what you are familiar with back home. The visit to the school is an enlightening opportunity to see the inspiring hope, dedication, and resourcefulness of the staff and students. We guarantee that the children’s smiling faces will stay with you long after your holiday is over. When visiting the school you will be shown around by your guide and may even have the opportunity to meet the incredible headmistress or one of the teachers. Hideaways is collaborating with the school to address certain challenges, the key of which is raising their current pass rate of 23 % to 50 % in 2021, you will learn more about this on your visit.
You will also visit the Vukani project, a group of elderly and/or disabled men and women who use ordinary glossy (donated) magazines to make the most beautiful pieces of bead jewellery. The visit is an interactive experience, allowing you the opportunity to chat with the jewellery makers and learn more about their lives, as well as learn how they make the beads. Of course, you will have the opportunity to buy some unique jewellery for yourself if you so wish.
The third project is the Thandanani sewing project; this is a self-sustaining business that the local women who had basic skills in sewing and entrepreneurial ambitions have started. They make, using beautiful materials and designs, a wide range of items including but not limited to morning robes, aprons, and shopping bags. Their designs and fabrics are truly African in style and beauty, the perfect gift for someone back home or simply just to add a touch of Africa to your home to remind you of your travels.
