Earth Day 2022 – Invest in our Planet

For Earth Day 2022, we would like to focus on Camp Kuzuma, Chobe situated within the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), on the borders of both the Chobe and Hwange National Parks. Reflecting the ethos of conservation and eco-tourism, the camp offers an off-the-grid safari experience with access to national parks with abundant wildlife, and the pristine Kazuma Forest Reserve.

Hideaways would like to highlight the incredible work and time invested into keeping our footprint minimal at Camp Kuzuma, Chobe. Off-grid and on point with sustainable living, this lodge offers the opportunity to truly disconnect from technology, and reconnect to oneself. The lodge operates as independently as possible, self-sufficient in electricity, water and food, ensuring each and every element is recycled and reused where feasible.

Manager Kevin le Trench has built the lodge a three-chambered compost system, utilizing and recycling any kitchen waste to create rich and nutritious soil for the vegetable garden. This delicious and fresh produce is then used in the menu, a farm-to-table and self-sustainable process. Elephant dung and leaves from surrounding trees are sometimes used to quicken the process, resourceful use of organic and natural materials as fertilizer.

Camp Kuzuma fulfills all of the requirements for an ecologically friendly location – solar panels, an organic vegetable garden, and a hydroponic system in the making. The solar energy collected operates the lodge; all appliances, the kitchen, water heating as well as two boreholes. One borehole services the lodge itself, the other – the waterhole. Nature itself is benefitting from the solar panels, providing animals with water all year round, supporting conservation.

Earth Day 2022 – Invest in our Planet

The theme of Earth Day 2022 is ‘Invest in Our Planet’.

Because a green future is a prosperous future. We need to act (boldly), innovate (broadly), and implement (equitably). It’s going to take all of us. All in. Businesses, governments, and citizens — everyone accounted for, and everyone accountable.

And while there is still time to solve the climate crisis, time to choose BOTH a prosperous and sustainable future, and time to restore nature and build a healthy planet for our children and their children, time is short. The Earth Day 2022 Theme is Invest In Our Planet. What Will You Do?” https://www.earthday.org/

A tree planting session recently took place at Camp Kuzuma, investing in the ecosystem and wildlife in and around the lodge. Conscious and environmentally beneficial decisions are made from the ground up on a daily basis, ensuring long-term results and sustainability. Programs and projects are shared with the guests, distributing conservation education and spreading awareness about the importance of conscious living, as an individual human as well as for the environment. As the earth day website reiterates, we are all in this together:
