Experience Nighttime in the African bush

Experience nighttime in the African bush on night drives at Elephants Eye Safari Lodge in Hwange National Park. The sun sets and the stars appear, slowly filling the sky as it gets darker. The night sounds of the bush are unique too; hooting owls, hyenas “laughing”, perhaps even some lions roaring, and the continuous sound of crickets and frogs in song.

Nighttime

Nocturnal animals come out after the sun sets and you’ll spot creatures that were either hiding or totally lethargic during the day. It’s now that you’ll get a chance to spot animals like the Small-spotted genet or White-tailed mongoose as well as a variety of owls and bats. You may even spot the elusive African aardvark.

nighttime

It’s a completely different experience than a day drive, led more by sounds than vision. Baboons barking could signal a lion or leopard on the hunt. Lions are awake and alert now, searching for prey.

nighttime

Nighttime game drives at Elephant’s Eye, Hwange take place after dinner has been enjoyed under the stars or are sometimes combined with sundowners in the bush before dinner and take about an hour and a half. An evening game drive is charged at $25 for Guided Groups and is free for FIT guests. It’s a great add on to the usual safari experience, allowing you to experience the bush in a different light. A powerful spotlight is used to spot the animals and search for tracks.

nighttime

There’s the added thrill of being out in the wild under the darkness of night, although of course, the guides take every safety precaution so that guests are not in danger. It’s a not-to-be-missed highlight of an African safari. Be sure to book this exciting opportunity when staying at our lodge.
