Rising more than a thousand metres above Cape Town, Table Mountain is one of Africa’s most recognisable natural landmarks and a defining feature of the Mother City. Its flat-topped summit offers sweeping views across the city, the Atlantic Ocean, and the distant peaks of the Cape Peninsula. For travellers exploring the Western Cape, a visit to Table Mountain is an experience that connects the wild beauty of nature with the rhythm of city life below.

The Experience
Reaching the summit can be as gentle or as adventurous as you wish. The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway glides smoothly to the top in just a few minutes, rotating for a 360-degree view as you ascend. For those who prefer the challenge of a hike, several trails wind their way up the mountain, including the popular Platteklip Gorge route and more scenic options like India Venster and Skeleton Gorge. Each path reveals the mountain’s unique fynbos vegetation, part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, one of the most diverse plant regions on Earth.
At the summit, boardwalks and walking paths lead to viewpoints overlooking the city, Table Bay, and Robben Island. On clear days, you can see as far as Cape Point to the south and the Cederberg Mountains to the north. Rock hyraxes (locally called dassies) often sun themselves on the boulders, unbothered by visitors admiring the view.

When to Visit
Table Mountain can be visited year-round, though mornings often offer the clearest conditions before the “tablecloth” of cloud settles over the summit. Summer (November to March) brings warm, dry weather ideal for hiking, while winter (June to August) offers cooler days and dramatic skies that photographers love. Always check weather updates before heading up, as the cableway and trails may close in strong winds.
Good to Know
Bring a light jacket, even on warm days, as temperatures at the top are often cooler. Comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, and water are recommended. The cableway operates daily (weather permitting), and tickets can be purchased online or at the base station.
