Mariet “Mash” Mashonganyika is Elephant’s Eye, Hwange’s Pro Guide and joined our team in May this year. Mash is a Registered Zimbabwean Professional Guide with over 12 years of experience in the field. Six of those 12 years was with &Beyond Matetsi River Lodge as a Photographic Pro Guide. Zimbabwe is known for producing exceptional Pro Guides. Because of the strict regulations that involve rigorous training, long apprenticeships, and finally demanding exams both practical and theory, Zimbabwean guides are of a very high calibre. This is one of the reasons, we can confidently say that you will be in very good hands with Mash as your guide. His training and experience will ensure that you will always feel safe in the bush. While his knowledge and expertise will provide an insightful and educational game drive.
Besides their qualifications, a guide’s personality is also an integral component of your African safari. Mash is a gentle confident guy with a big friendly smile. He complements our existing guiding team very well. Mash has a special liking for birds but says he equally loves all types of animals including the underrated small bugs.
“Mash was fantastic and we had a great time with him, he is completely at home, relaxed with all that the wildlife could throw at him including a confused and highly mobile elephant bull whilst on our walk, his knowledge and experience was formidable, great asset.”
Get to Know Mash:
“I am 44 and come from Masvingo, a small town situated in the central part of Zimbabwe near the Great Zimbabwe Ruins. I grew up on our family farm in the same area. It is here at the farm where the passion and love of nature developed at a tender age. Playing tracking games, chasing rabbits and spending much time in the bush just made me addicted to bush life. After completing high school I already knew that I was never going to be happy with a city job. I immediately started to study for my Guide’s Licence. I passed in 1998, completed my apprenticeship, and in 2001 I passed my Full Professional Guide Licence. I have since worked for various camps around Zimbabwe and I have developed a keen interest in birds and walking safaris.”
Come stay at our lodge and let Mash take you on a walking safari around our concession where he will share his extensive knowledge of the flora and fauna of the African bush.
