Your Experience

Wake up to the sounds of the wild, with the first light of the day breaking through the trees. After a hot cup of coffee around the fire, head out for a half-day game drive through our private concession, where our expert guides will help you track elephants, lions, and other wildlife as the bush comes to life. Back at camp, lunch is served in the dining tent, followed by time to rest in the shade, recharge at the solar-powered charging station, or simply take in the surroundings.

Or opt for a full-day game drive to Khwai River or Moremi Game Reserve, where you’ll encounter even more diverse wildlife. When visiting Khwai, take to the water with a mokoro ride, gliding silently through the channels of the Delta, keeping an eye out for hippos and crocodiles at eye level.

As the sun sets, enjoy a refreshing sundowner before heading back to camp. A night drive offers the chance to see leopards on the move, hyenas scavenging, and smaller nocturnal animals rarely seen during the day. The bonfire awaits your return and provides the perfect place to relax and share stories from the day. Afterward, gather around for a traditional bush dinner under the stars, where the sounds of the African bush fill the air.

After a day of adventure, retreat to your tent for a peaceful night, ready to wake up to another thrilling day in the heart of the wild.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wi-Fi is available in the main guest areas at Camelthorn Bush Camp, and mobile reception is limited. Connectivity is intentionally kept light, allowing guests to focus on time outdoors and the wildlife moving through the surrounding concession.

A stay at Camelthorn Bush Camp includes accommodation, all meals, water, soft drinks, beers, ciders, mixers, house wine, two shared safari activities per day, and laundry. Activities are guided by experienced local guides and explore the wider Khwai and Moremi ecosystems.

Camelthorn Bush Camp welcomes children aged 7 years and older. The camp is best suited to families with older children who are comfortable in a tented, unfenced safari environment and interested in game viewing activities rather than lodge-based entertainment.

Safari activities at Camelthorn include morning and afternoon game drives, night drives, and full-day game drives into Moremi Game Reserve and the Khwai region, offering access to a wide variety of habitats and wildlife.

Mokoro excursions and boat cruises in the wider Okavango Delta region can be arranged at an additional cost when water levels and conditions allow, offering a quieter, water-based perspective of the delta environment.

Camelthorn Bush Camp is located in a wildlife-rich concession bordering Moremi Game Reserve, an area known for strong year-round game viewing. Guests can realistically expect to see elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippo, and a variety of antelope species. Predator sightings are a highlight, with lion frequently encountered and leopard commonly seen. Spotted hyena and wild dog are also present in the area. Birdlife is excellent throughout the year, particularly during the green season.

Camelthorn Bush Camp is a seasonal bush camp, operating between April and September, when conditions in the Khwai and Moremi region are at their most favourable.

  • April to May: The landscape is still green after the rains, temperatures are mild, and wildlife viewing begins to improve as animals move back towards permanent water. This is a quieter period with a fresh, open feel.
  • June to August: Cooler winter months bring crisp mornings, comfortable daytime temperatures, and excellent visibility for game drives as vegetation thins. Wildlife activity along the river systems is strong, making this a particularly rewarding time to visit.
  • September: Warmer, late dry-season conditions often result in increased wildlife concentrations around water sources, with dynamic predator and prey interactions before the camp closes for the summer months.

A stay of three nights is ideal at Camelthorn Bush Camp. This allows time to explore both the Khwai and Moremi areas, enjoy multiple game drives, and settle into the relaxed rhythm of a classic tented safari.

Camelthorn Bush Camp is best suited to couples, small groups, and experienced safari travellers looking for a traditional tented safari experience with excellent wildlife access. It appeals to guests who value intimacy, time on game drives, and the balance of comfort and wilderness offered by the Greater Moremi Region.
