Hideaways Mhara River Camp

Wi-Fi is available in the main camp area, and mobile reception is very limited. Connectivity is intentionally light, encouraging guests to slow down and connect with the surrounding wilderness.

A stay at Mhara River Camp includes accommodation, all meals, water, soft drinks, beers, ciders, mixers, house wine, two shared activities per day, and laundry. Activities are guided by experienced professional guides and focus on exploring the area on foot and by vehicle.

Mhara River Camp welcomes children aged 12 and older. Due to the focus on walking safaris and the unfenced nature of the camp, it is best suited to older children who are comfortable in a remote wilderness environment. Families with younger children may enquire about exclusive-use arrangements.

Activities at Mhara centre on guided walking safaris, which are the highlight of the area, as well as game drives on dry river beds and time spent exploring the riverine landscapes of Mana Pools. The camp’s location allows guests to experience wildlife encounters at ground level, often at a slower, more intimate pace than vehicle-based safaris.

Mhara River Camp is located in a quieter section of Mana Pools National Park, known for its strong elephant presence and excellent walking safari opportunities. Guests can realistically expect to see elephants, buffalo, and a variety of antelope species. Lions and spotted hyena are present in the area, while leopard and wild dog sightings are possible but never guaranteed. Birdlife is a major highlight, particularly along the river and during the summer months, where some highlights are the African Pitta, Broad Billed Roller, Southern Carmine Bee Eaters, Red Backed Shrike and many more.

Mhara River Camp is open all year round, each season offering something special.

• May to June: cooler temperatures, fresh landscapes, and excellent conditions for walking safaris.
• July to August: dry, mild winter months with comfortable daytime temperatures and strong wildlife activity on the concession, with a lot of predator action.
• September to October: warmer conditions and increased wildlife concentrations near permanent water, often resulting in particularly rewarding sightings. This is prime time for predator action.
• November to March (green season): Summer rains transform the landscape, bringing lush vegetation and fewer visitors. This is the best time for birding, with migratory species present in large numbers. Wildlife remains in the area, though it can be more dispersed, and the overall feel is quieter and more atmospheric.

Each period offers a slightly different experience, but all are well suited to walking-focused safaris.

A stay of three to four nights is recommended at Mhara River Camp. This allows time to experience multiple walks, enjoy the river environment, and settle into the slower, more immersive pace that defines Mana Pools.

Mhara River Camp is best suited to experienced safari travellers, couples, and small groups who have a strong interest in walking safaris and spending time close to wildlife on foot. It appeals to those who value simplicity, space, and a deep connection to the natural environment rather than a lodge-centric experience.
