Victoria Falls

The glorious phenomenon of Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and should definitely be included on any safari to Southern Africa. The Zambezi River flows through six countries and along its course it cascades down a magnificent gorge, resulting in the spectacular sight on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. With a width of more than 1 700 meters and a height of more than 100 meters, Vic Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in the world. The falls are also known as “The Smoke That Thunders” as a result of the white mist created by the water’s spray and the accompanying roaring sound the water makes as it thunders down.

Why visit Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and affords visitors a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Africa. Two-thirds of the actual falls lie within Zambia with a footbridge bringing one up close to the majestic sight. Open and accessible throughout the year, travelers will nonetheless have very different experiences depending on their chosen season for a safari to Vic Falls. Between December and March, the rainy season brings higher water volumes, making the falls more dramatic. It slows to a trickle in the dry season, from April to October.

Some of the Victoria Falls hotels and accommodations are right along the riverbank. The remainder is conveniently located in town for easy access to restaurants, bars and adventure centers. Timing your excursion to Africa’s Adventure Capital is a personal choice, just as the activity options are. Marvel at the falls from above in a helicopter, participate in seasonal white-water rafting or a canoe safari on the Zambezi River or take a free fall during gorge swinging or bungee jumping.

Vic Falls’ proximity to the prime wilderness areas of the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park in Botswana, and Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe makes it the perfect destination for an all-inclusive safari experience.
