Floodplain Excursion in Mana Pools

Safari Experiences

A full-day floodplain excursion offers a chance to explore one of the most well-known landscapes in Mana Pools National Park. Shaped by the rise and fall of the Zambezi River, these open plains draw wildlife in from across surrounding areas, creating a natural gathering point where a wide variety of sightings can unfold.

Hideaways Mhara River Camp invites you to spend the day venturing further into Mana Pools, offering a different perspective on the park and its ever-changing environment.

Into the Floodplains

This guided day trip takes you beyond the camp’s private concession into wider floodplain areas, where the landscape opens into broad, flat expanses once covered by seasonal water.

As the waters recede, they leave behind fresh grasses and fertile ground, attracting herds of elephant, buffalo, and plains game. Predators follow, moving through the same open spaces, often visible from a distance as they track movement across the plains.

Shaped by Seasons

The floodplains offer a rewarding experience throughout the year, with each season bringing something different. During the rainy season, much of this area lies submerged beneath rising water. In the drier months, it transforms into open grazing land, scattered with channels, pools, and traces of where water once moved.

Your guide will interpret these signs as you explore, from tracks left in soft ground to patterns of movement that reveal how animals use the space. This constant transformation makes the floodplains one of the most active and dynamic areas to experience.

Time to Pause

A picnic lunch and drinks are enjoyed out in the bush, offering a moment to pause within the landscape itself. Whether beneath the shade of a tree or overlooking open plains, this time allows you to take in the surroundings without interruption.

A Guided Experience

This excursion is led by an experienced guide who brings both knowledge and perspective to the journey. While walking may be possible, it is not guaranteed, depending on guide availability and camp activities on the day.

The experience is designed for small groups, allowing for a more personal and flexible approach as you move through the floodplains.

A Broader Perspective

This excursion offers a wider view of Mana Pools, moving beyond the immediate surroundings of camp. While the floodplains are well-known, they are also some of the most frequently visited. Experiencing them as part of a day trip offers a valuable contrast, allowing you to explore this active landscape before returning to Mhara’s exclusive and private concession.
