Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve

Safari Experiences

Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve is a must-visit destination, located just a 20-minute drive outside Plettenberg Bay. Set against the backdrop of the Tsitsikamma Mountains and covering 2,200 hectares of diverse landscapes, the reserve offers visitors a true African safari experience within easy reach of the coast. It is the largest game reserve in the Southern Cape and is a perfect blend of savannah grasslands, indigenous forests, and riverine environments.

Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve was established to create a protected area for Africa’s wildlife, especially for endangered species like the rhino, and to provide an authentic safari experience along the Garden Route. Founded in the early 2000s, the reserve was created with the vision of conserving indigenous wildlife while also offering visitors a chance to learn about and appreciate South Africa’s natural heritage.

Over the years, the reserve has grown into one of the region’s top wildlife destinations, contributing to the conservation of both flora and fauna, while also promoting eco-tourism. Its commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism makes it a vital part of the local ecosystem.

What Can You Do at Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve?

Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve offers a range of activities for visitors looking to experience the African wilderness and see its wildlife. The most popular activity at the reserve is the guided game drive. Game rangers lead safaris in open 4×4 vehicles, taking visitors through the reserve in search of Africa’s iconic wildlife. The game drives offer many opportunities to spot some of the “Big 5” – leopards, elephants, and rhinos – as well as many other animals that call the reserve home. With its varied habitats, the reserve is home to a large variety of bird species. From the riverbanks to the savannah, bird enthusiasts can spot eagles, owls, kingfishers, and many more.
