The KAZA Region

Tales from the Bush

Camp Kuzuma is part of the Kavango–Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA). This designation refers to a conservation zone made up of five countries that have pledged to protect their wildlife areas which surround the Zambezi and Kavango Rivers. The mission of this initiative is “To establish a world-class transfrontier conservation area and tourism destination in the Okavango and Zambezi river basin regions of Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe within the context of sustainable development.”

The primary objectives of the establishment of the KAZA conservation area are to:

  • Foster trans-national collaboration and co-operation in implementing ecosystems and cultural resource management;
  • Promote alliances in the management of biological and cultural resources and encourage social, economic and other partnerships among their Governments and stakeholders;
  • Enhance ecosystem integrity and natural ecological processes by harmonizing natural resources management approaches and tourism development across international boundaries;
  • Develop mechanisms and strategies for local communities to participate meaningfully in, and tangibly benefit from, the Trans-Frontier Conservation Area (TFCA);
  • Promote cross-border tourism as a means of fostering regional socio-economic development.”

This ambitious project is an impressive step in conservation and collaboration, something we at Hideaways firmly believe in. Besides being incredibly beneficial for the human and animal populations of the area, it will also have positive travel implications too. One of the ways it directly benefits travel is the introduction of a KAZA UniVisa, visitors to the region need only apply and pay for one Visa which will allow them to travel freely between the participating countries.

The size of this conservation area is especially impressive, it’s almost twice the size of the United Kingdom and covers a diverse range of ecosystems and landscapes. From dense woodland canopy to soft sand grassy plains to lush wetland and dry desert, all these areas are protected. And what’s more there is careful consideration for community building and mitigating human wildlife conflict.

KAZA facilitators take care to listen to the concerns of communities that fall in the zone and come up with innovative solutions to ensure there is peaceful and beneficial coexistence. The Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area is set to become one of the world’s greatest conservation success stories and Hideaways is thrilled to throw their support behind such a benevolent initiative.
